Sam Bootle
Sam Bootle is a doctoral
student at Birkbeck
College, London. He is working on Jules Laforgue's
encounter with the philosophy of Arthur Schopenhauer and Eduard von
Hartmann, with a focus on how this encounter was conditioned by ideas of
otherness. His approach encompasses both close reading and intellectual
history. The principal themes of his thesis are Franco-German relations
in the 1870s and 1880s, the reception of Buddhism, exoticism and the
Unconscious.
