NINTH ANNUAL CONFERENCE

Dirt and Debris
University of Birmingham

7 - 9 April 2011

We invite proposals for papers treating aspects of the conference theme in relation to nineteenth-century French and Francophone culture, history and art history. Suggested topics include, but are not limited to:

• Gossip, scandal and dishing the dirt

• Personal disgrace and stained reputations

• Pornography and erotic literature

• Wrecks and ruins

• Scents and smells

• Textual debris (pre-texts, discarded work, uncompleted manuscripts)

• Crime and underworlds
• The earth/soil and its products

• Innocence, virtue and purity

• War debris and the aftermath of battle

• Diseases, infections and bodily dirt

• Flotsam, jetsam and marine debris

• Hygiene obsessions

• Clean slates: generosity and forgiveness

Proposals for individual papers or for panels should be addressed by email, by 31st October 2010, to Dr Andrew Watts, SDN Conference Organiser, at the following address: sdn.proposals@yahoo.co.uk  

Postgraduates whose papers are accepted for the conference will be eligible to submit their paper for consideration for the prestigious SDN Postgraduate Prize, awarded for the best postgraduate conference paper submitted.

Nous invitons des propositions pour des interventions traitant divers aspects du thème du colloque (en rapport avec le XIXe siècle français et francophone), qu’il faut interpréter au sens large. La liste suivante peut servir de point de départ :

• Ragots, scandales et calomnies

• Disgrâces personnelles et réputations salies

• Littérature érotique ou pornographique

• Carcasses et ruines

• Parfums et odeurs

• Fragments textuels (ébauches, travaux abandonnés, manuscrits
• incomplets)

• Crimes et bas-fonds

• La terre et ses dérivés

• Innocence, vertu et pureté

• Vestiges de guerre et lendemains de batailles

• Maladies, infections et résidus corporels
  
• Epaves et déchets marins

• Hygiène obsessionnelle

• Passer l'éponge : générosité et pardon
